On 16th of April 2011, I visited the famous Bakel Fort at Kanhangad. Its about 10Km from Kanhangad town on the way to Kasargod via the Chandragiri bridge. This was my third visit to Bakel Fort, but it seems to be very beautiful place now after the make up done as part of the tourism development.
During my last two visits, the place seems to have a deserted look. With no care, the whole area was covered with weeds and there were no proper walkways also. Many of the stones which were part of the fort were fallen here and there and the place were mostly under the control of anti-social elements too. Now it has proper entrance, there are officials to manage the tourists visiting the place, there are proper walkways, with green grass being planted to make things more green and lush.
Its said that the fort is spread over 40 acres of land and hence one have to spare a couple of hours to have a good look at the fort and enjoy the breeze from the Arabian Sea.
The picture on the right shows the lawn and the walk towards the gate as seen from the watch tower. The best time to visit this place is during the evening so that we could enjoy the sunset from the top of the fort. Also during evening we could save ourselves from the pricking sun especially during summer days.
The picture on the left shows the entrance and the ticket counter. The place is open throughout the year and timings are from morning 8 am till evening 6pm.
